The lack of original software can be overcome by buying a copy of VueScan. These are available at reasonable prices on ebay. If you are tempted to scan them yourself then a dedicated AF film scanner (something like a Minolta Scan Dual 3 or 4) will give better results than a flatbed for 35mm. The learning curve can be brutal depending on your photographic knowledge. However, more detail can be obtained using Silverfast AI or similar products. I'd just buy a newer Epson flat bed scanner that will do slides and negatives and do it yourself. Time moved on, storage got cheap, I've been scanning 35mm, 127, and at some point old 620 when I get done. At the time I didn't have the storage to scan all the slides I have.
